We woke up to a WINTER WONDERLAND this morning!

Ainse, Pete & I got up bright and early and ran across the street to see Whistler Village looking all pretty & white! (Row was still snug in bed...)

Staff Housing (where we live) in the foreground with Blackcomb Mountain in the background (the white trail is one of the many many ski runs right outside our door!

Our house... is a very very very fine house... Despite our unit being slightly underground, it's still sweet as + we get to look out our window and see beautiful snow covered fir trees!

Welcome Ainsely & Pete!

We've got our new flatties for the season - a lovely jubbly couple from the Gold Coast. They've only been here 2 nights and it already feels like we are old friends. Fun times ahead...

Thanksgiving - Take III (Photos)

Thanksgiving - Take II

The celebrations continued 3 nights later with my (Greer) work dinner - was loads of fun. We were wined and dined by our supervisors and were all given prizes. We at the Reservations Centre don't work on commission, so work dinners are used to recognise staff for highest sales etc. After 15 mins of some serious prizes being awarded (e.g. winter gear, skis, snowboard, ipod...) I started to question the merits of being Bargaining Betty with my clients - I always spend heaps of time with them working out the best deal for them - how they can make the most of their time here without spending all their $$$ - anyway - the 'awards' ended, and I was still prizeles...
That is, until they started the old 'random name draw out of a paper bag'. The supervisors put a TON of prizes on top of a bench, the idea being that the person whose name was read could approach the bench and pick their prize.
Oh yeah baby, I was SOOOO pumped to win a serious prize. It was MY turn!!! My breath was held as they pulled the first name out......... "Stacey!".......... rats........... ok ok......... bring it on......... this time yeah yeah......... "Nicholas!" .......... Ratz!........... it's cool it's cool.......... this time it's me... this time it's me..... "Emily!" ........ come on man come on!!! .......... "Jason!".......... ok ok ok, this time this time for real!!! ........... "Natalie!" ...........
And so it continued, until half the people had claimed their prize (there were about 40 of us). I started to give up hope, and took a long sip of my white wine.... Ahhhh... the let-down was unbelievable.....
It was only 7 minutes later, when they were still calling names, that it dawned on me, that in fact, because we are a 'team-focused' company, everyone was going to win a prize! My spirits lifted, I started scowering the bench top, working out which of the few remaining prize I wanted... And so I scowered... scowered.... scowered... I would pick something, sure enough a name was called, and sure enough the person would take the one I wanted!
When my name was FINALLY called, I put my hand in the bag to call out one of the other unfortunate souls who had been left to last when I realised I was, in fact, the second last person, and there was only one other name!
I called it out, and headed to the bench - I picked the only cool thing left, a white belt - I had been needing a new one so I grabbed it, my mood had suddenly picked back up.
And THEN, the girl who was last, approaches the table, scowers the array of crap prizes and then looks at me, dead in the eye, and says, "Oh, are you having the belt?"
I said, "Um... yeah".
She said, "Oh... can I have it and you can have the bag??".
And I - yes... I I I - there is no-one else to blame... said YES!!!
Why did I do it!!! Before I knew what had happened my 'not wanting to be mean and say no' had left me beltless and in my hands I held a blue bag with an inscription on it, "The Pique".
The Pique is the local newspaper. In other words, it's the equivalent of going to a dinner for one of the world's top ski resort destination (which WhistlerBlackcomb is), having the chance to win an array of kick-but WhistlerBlackcomb gear and walking away with a "Sunday Tasmanian" bright blue bag.
To make things even better, the bag was made for the 10 year anniversary of The Pique, which was celelbrated in 2004.
It is therefore the equivalent of walking away with a "Sunday Tasmanian 1994-2004" bright blue bag, in the year 2006.
Now I don't mean to be Complaining Cassandra, I really don't - but it was quite an emotional rollercoaster for me. I have since discovered the my bag is actually the perfect grocery bag, so have resolved myself to the fact that it was in fact, THE best prize, that it kicks arse over any of the other rad gear that other people got, and that I am in fact, the envy of my fellow co-workers. Poor things - I hope they don't take it out on my personally, I mean, it's not my fault that I won the BEST prize, it's just that things went my way on that fateful evening...
We celebrated my winnings with a serious boogie at a couple of the clubs here. Marilyn, my rockstar French-Canadian work mate & I rocked the house - hadn't been out dancing with a girlfriend for ages so was really really fun. Good times I say good times.

Thanksgiving - Take I

It was Canadian Thanksgiving Day on Monday. We celebrated it at Anna & Mike's over a lovely Roast Turkey dinner with all the Canadian wham-sha-bam one can handle including gravy, cranberry, mashed potato, corn, greens - AND of course the traditional Pupmkin Pie for desert! (You will note the delicately decorated Turkey on the pumpkin pie to keep up the theme - please note, despite its uncanny real-life resemblance, there is NOT a real-life turkey sitting on the pie, it's just whipped cream with a sultana eye on the head).

Juniper

I scored a free bear tour through work yesterday - they usually cost CA$190 so was stoked to get a freebie! Anyway, it's towards the end of the season and most of the berries have been eaten now so the bears are getting ready for hibernation but we did manage to spot Juniper, a 5 y.o. beautiful female black bear - although she does look a bit like a pig in this particular angle, I assure you that in real life, she is absolutely magnificent.
We got pretty close - I took this pic from no more than 10m away. We stayed with her about 20 minutes, just watching her. The best part was that 5 people cancelled at the last minute, so it was just myself, Michael Allen ('the' world wide expert on black bears) and one other lady - very special.
We also got to see a bear den and learn about the whole hibernation process, and saw another BIG male bear - he was about 100m away and we couldn't get any closer to him - but he was seriously big so I didn't mind...
I also got a good appreciation of just how huge Whistler mountain is - there is SO much terrain here - and it's all so beautiful! Can't imagine what it's like covered in snow - a real winter wonderland! The scenic shot is taken from about 3/4 the way up Whistler mountain and looks down on Whistler village. I have delicately sketched a replica of our house into the picture so you can see the location - I suspect it's a bit like "Where's Wally" in that it's so well, and discretely drawn that one would hardly notice it had I not written it down... All I can say is that in terms of finding a 'home away from home' this is hard to top!

And now... for this week's TOP NEWS story

It can be summed up in one simple word.
B U C K E T.
That's right.... none other but a KFC bucket. After years (quite literally) of Rowan nudging me each time an ad came on, pleading, "Can we get a bucket!?!?" and me saying, "No no no no...", Row & I finally took a new turn in our relationship...
We didn't do it alone though - in fact, we had spent weeks (quite literally) planning the momentous occassion with our regular Wed night dinner dates, otherwise known as the spunky Anna & Mike.
All I can say is we did it. I had never, and I repeat never, done it before. I'm glad I've done it. I don't regret it. And yet, I'm not sure we will do it again.
Having said that, the crispy skin marinated in the 11 secret herbs & spices did go down well. Especially with a couple of quiet beers... Almost a little too well though; and it's for that very reason ladies and gentlemen that we will not be doing 'the buck' again any time soon.
We've set a preliminary date for our 8 1/2 month anniversary... so come August 2012, we may just visit the colonel one more time.

This Week's Top News Stories

1. Rowan's trusty Mr Black Boxers made their 350th-time-worn anniversary on Tuesday. We celebrated with champagne and caviar and wept tears of laughter at the beautiful and heart-warming speech made by Mr BB.
2. It's official, after years of doing it way too rarely, I am now a regular flosser. Will be interested to note whether my dentist notices the difference upon my next visit.
3. I made a delicious asian noodle salad last night. I was about to devour the last, mouth-watering mouthfull when I noticed one of the almonds was moving. Upon closer inspection, I realised it was a small piece of moving lettuce. Upon looking even closer, I realised it was a very slowly moving slightly reduced-in size caterpillar. Mmmm... caterpillar...
4. Row & I are officially geared up for the season! We went to the big sales last night and did some serious shopping action - Bargaining Betty was on fire like never before. We are sooooooo amped for winter!!!
5. I am now an official lady. I have had nails for the last few months and they're going strong. A big thanks to Natalie, Nelly, Neena, Niamo, Narelle, Natasha, Nichole, Nelly, Nancy and Nadia - The 10 girls have been growin' strong like never before - good work girls, keep it up I say keep it up!
6. BREAKING NEWS... Miss Kate Amanda Perkins has JUST confirmed she and Ben will be coming to play in February - wohoooo - sooo excited!!!
